Mezzo-soprano, Ruth Kiang studied at Durham and Cambridge Universities of before moving to London in 2005. She now has a busy freelance career, performing and recording regularly with a wide variety of professional vocal ensembles, including Gabrieli Consort, Polyphony, Choir of the Enlightenment, Choir of the Academy of Ancient Music, BBC Singers, Eric Whitacre Singers, Philharmonia Voices, Britten Sinfonia Voices, Sonoro and 5-part consort, the Clerks. Ruth studies with Yvonne Kenny.
CD recordings include Britten’s War Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah (with step-out solos), Britten’s A Boy was Born, an unaccompanied programme: A Song of Farewell, Haydn’s Seasons (forthcoming) with Gabrieli Consort; multiple recordings with Polyphony: Bruckner, Poulenc, Gabriel Jackson, Lukaszewski, Handel, a disc of American music, Bach’s St John Passion, Arvo Pärt and Karl Jenkins; Bach’s St John Passion with Academy of Ancient Music; multiple recordings with Eric Whitacre Singers. Ruth has also performed on many film soundtracks as part of Metro Voices, Synergy Vocals, Apollo Voices, London Voices and Pinewood Singers.
Recent solo work includes Handel Judus Maccabeus (Israelitish Man, Messenger & Priest) with Carshalton Choral Society; Mendelssohn Elijah with Brandenburg Sinfonia at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London; step-out solos in Bach Magnificat with Sonoro at St Martin-in-the-Fields; Vivaldi Gloria with Constanza Chorus at Marylebone Parish Church. Forthcoming solo work in 2019 includes Mozart Requiem with Sonoro and Haydn Nelson Mass with Temple Singers
2019-2021 work includes a John Pickard premiere and Ligeti with BBC Singers; Sonoro’s third commercial recording, of music by Martin Bussey; a tour to Oslo and recording of Karl Jenkins with Polyphony; performances with Gabrieli Consort in UK; a tour to Budapest with Eric Whitacre Singers; recording of Handel Brockes Passion and tour to Poland of Handel Coronation Anthems with Academy of Ancient Music; performance of Verdi with Monteverdi Choir in Paris; performances of Max Richter Voices with Tenebrae at the Barbican; a David Sawer world premiere with BBC Singers; a recording of Beethoven Symphony 9 with Mark Elder and the Hanover Band for an online streamed performance; coaching with EXAUDI at the 2021 Voix Nouvelles Academy at Royaumont Abbey in France, Boulez cummings ist Der Dichter with Ensemble InterContemporain in Paris with EXAUDI, and a performance of Handel Messiah in Pisa with the English Concert.
